Ethiopia's Black Gold

Watch this documentary to learn more about why coffee, cash crop, is such an important export for Ethiopia.

Further reading and more videos about globalisation can be found on the site.

Our 'Shrinking' World

This week we made a start on our next topic and began to discuss the phenomenon that is 'globalisation'. We talked about when globalisation might have started and what the drivers of this process could be. One suggestion was the advent of satellite technology which has given rise to new ways of communicating across the globe, multi-channel TV, and of course lorry drivers getting stuck up country lanes thanks to sat nav!

The awe inspiring video which follows was recorded from the International Space Station (ISS). The ISS orbits the Earth along with the many of the satellites that have helped 'shrink' our world. The video is made up from a series of time lapse images captured with a camera mounted on the front of the ISS. To record the images the ISS orbited Earth at night starting over the Pacific Ocean, travelled over North and South America, and then finally across Antarctica.

Urban Transects

Students in Year 11 recently used Google Street View to create photo transects of various towns and cities in the UK. Here are a few examples of their work.

Life in Dharavi

This is a useful web page to use for your research into the Dharavi, it includes interviews with different people in living in the slum.

London vs. Mumbai

Watch the two videos below side by side to gain an insight into the contrasting environments of two of the world's major cities, London and Mumbai. The videos are from Urban Earth, a collaborative project which attempts to "(re)present geographical patterns that are revealed in maps".

The Sustainable Slums of Mumbai?

Dharavi's rooftop 'rag-pickers'
A short video and article about Mumbai's slums from CNN. Includes some great photos of Dharavi.

Redevelopment in Mumbai

A few useful websites to use when researching the redevelopment plans for Mumbai.
Towards the end of the second part of Slumming It there is a section on how slums in Mumbai have already been 'regenerated' and plans for further redevelopment in the city as India's economy continues to grow.

Slumming it with Kevin McCloud

This is an excellent documentary to watch for a case study of informal housing in an LEDC city. The two part documentary gives a balanced insight into the problems of life in some of Mumbai's slums and also highlights some of the positives. The second part looks how slums in Mumbai have been 'regenerated' and plans for further redevelopment in the city as India's economy continues to grow.

Although we have watched some clips for the series in lessons, I recommend watching the rest of the two programmes in your own time.

London 2012: Was it Worth it?

Year 11 students have been debating whether or not the London 2012 Olympics were successful as an urban regeneration project and if they really have transformed East London for the better.

As part of their work on this topic the students prepared presentation focusing on different aspects of the urban regeneration. Here are a selection of the presentations used during our recent class debate on the topic.

Urban Regeneration and the London 2012 Olympics

Here are three videos which cover some of the economic, social and environmental impacts of the London 2012 Olympics.
