Our 'Shrinking' World

This week we made a start on our next topic and began to discuss the phenomenon that is 'globalisation'. We talked about when globalisation might have started and what the drivers of this process could be. One suggestion was the advent of satellite technology which has given rise to new ways of communicating across the globe, multi-channel TV, and of course lorry drivers getting stuck up country lanes thanks to sat nav!

The awe inspiring video which follows was recorded from the International Space Station (ISS). The ISS orbits the Earth along with the many of the satellites that have helped 'shrink' our world. The video is made up from a series of time lapse images captured with a camera mounted on the front of the ISS. To record the images the ISS orbited Earth at night starting over the Pacific Ocean, travelled over North and South America, and then finally across Antarctica.
