Great Linford Photos

Here are some photos taken by Mr Nash in Great Linford on Friday. You should use these photos to help you complete this week's geography and history homeworks.

There are also a two useful links you should look at:

Changing High Streets Fieldwork

To finish their controlled assessments Year 11 students need to complete a final fieldwork day to collect data for the written analysis. For this we will be undertaking a comparative study of Newport Pagnell and Bletchley high streets this Friday.

Please see the letter for further details and a reply slip.

Annotated Photos of the Afon Caerfanell

Following their fieldwork investigation of the Afon Caerfanell students in Year 8 have annotated photos of the different sites we visited on the river. Here are some photos brilliantly annotated by Lola de Gorter.

Changing High Streets Wordles

Year 10 students were busy in their geography lesson last Wednesday presenting the findings of their fieldwork on changing high streets. Part of the fieldwork day involved students conducting a questionnaire of local people about changes to the high streets in Bletchley and Stony Stratford.
Although most of the questionnaire results could be presented as conventional bar or pie charts, sometimes these methods are not suitable especially for open questions. So that they could present their findings in an engaging way the students learnt how to use a web based application, called Wordle, to create ‘word clouds’ of their results. In each of the examples below the size of the font is related to how often the word occurs in people’s answers, the larger the font the more frequently the word was mentioned.

Changing High Streets Fieldwork

Last Friday GCSE geography students enjoyed a fieldwork day in Milton Keynes, as part of their study of how the traditional British high street is changing. They quizzed local people in Bletchley and Stony Stratford, with their questionnaires prepared in class, about past and present changes to the high streets in the two places.

They interacted with some vibrant characters from the local community, gathering valuable information for their projects. The students demonstrated good communication skills and an ability to engage with the public confidently. Mapping the high streets was an important aspect of the trip with students identifying changes between the present day and 1991 by using historical maps.

We also toured a recreation of a classic 19th century high street at Milton Keynes Museum, enjoying an excellent guided tour from a local volunteer in period costume. The students got some hands on experience of Victorian shopping. Students enjoyed trying out a blood circulator on each other at the chemists and got an eye-opening insight into a Victorian butchers.

Congratulations to the participating students, who showed maturity and professionalism, resulting in a productive day's fieldwork.
