Glacial Landforms

Over the past week we have been learning about the various landforms that are left behind as glaciers retreat. These landforms can be grouped into erosion landforms and deposition landforms.

Erosion landforms are created by freeze-thaw action, plucking and abrasion, these include:
  • arĂȘtes
  • corries (cirques)
  • hanging valleys
  • glacial troughs (u-shaped valleys)
  • pyramidal peaks
  • ribbon lakes
Deposition landforms are formed from material deposited by a glacier, for example:
  • drumlins
  • erratics
  • moraines
Watch the following videos to learn how some of these landforms were formed in the Scottish Highlands.
